On an undulating sea of blue satin, Sherrie Wolf’s teacups evoke the nostalgia that lies just below the surface of our most treasured belongings. In deeply considered still lifes, Wolf brings everyday objects, cultural touchstones, and personal stories to bear in her paintings. Sea of Tea recalls a voyage taken by the artist’s own mother, who crossed the vast Pacific Ocean from New Zealand to the United States just after World War II, carrying her possessions and family history. “We can recognize a commonality that connects one generation to another, one era to another,” Wolf says. “My hope is to learn from our past by looking at it intensely.”
